The New Year is here, which means new memories, new experiences, new friends, and a new you. A New Year is a common starting point for many people who are looking to look and feel better. But where to start? Should you run on a treadmill? Eat less? Join a gym?
There is a lot of fitness information out there so we have decided to help you start off on the right track. Here are the 5 essentials for a new you!
One: Cardiovascular Conditioning
This doesn’t mean just running on a treadmill; that is really monotonous. Conditioning should be varied, fun, and challenging. Agility drills, circuits, medicine balls, kettlebells, stairs, sled pushing are to name a few. Your conditioning must be dynamic and intense. You are not just trying to lose weight, you are trying to look and feel better.
Two: Strength Training
To look and feel better you need to get toned and lean. It is simply not enough to do just conditioning. You must also strength train. Squats, lunges, deadlifts, Glute raises, and upper body work. You can use barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, and a variety of body weight exercises. Make sure you have good form and technique so you do not get hurt.
Three: Flexibility and Mobility
Being able to move easily and be more flexible is as equally important. This will help keep your joints healthy, make day to day life easier, prevent muscle tightness, and reduce injury. Nothing ruins a journey quite like a devastating injury. You need to do static and dynamic stretching. A foam roller is a great addition as it simulates a deep tissue massage.
Four: Nutrition & Diet
Arguably the least favorite essential to a fitness program; but, it doesn’t have to be. Everyone has their own needs when dieting. Some people hate diets and others are just on the wrong diets. The diet you are on should be flexible to you. You shouldn’t feel bad about dieting and it shouldn’t be difficult. There is a perfect diet out there for everyone. Maybe you just need help finding it!
Five: Ask for help
Maybe there is a friend you know who has a lot of knowledge. Maybe a fitness coach in the area you could talk to. We know how important it is to help and support people while they are on their journey. Never be afraid to take the first step towards your goal. You can do it and there are people around you who can help!
